Brindisi Terminal Container: Malta Freeport dismisses all the workers

April, 07 2004

The dramatic adventure of "Malta Freeport" in the port of Brindisi is going to reach a conclusion. On the 1st of April, the dismissing collective procedure for the 80 employees of Brindisi Terminal Italia (BTI) started. The dream of the Apulian port to become the reference port for the Mediterranean feeder service has vanished in the worst way. According to the promises of the initial phase, 150.000 TEUS should have been moved, but in the past two years only a couple of ONU ships berthed at the Terminal. The 2003 budget was of 356 TEUS. Now all the efforts aim to save as much as possible, but there is someone, like Cna, that asks the revocation of the concession and a new tender for contract. The Port Committee will fix next meeting.
