Additional Taiwan ports open for mainland shipments

May, 11 2004

Taiwan will open the ports of Taichung and Keelung for cargo shipment services within Mainland China this month due to the continued growth in goods being transported across the straits. A spokesperson from the department of Navigation and Aviation of Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) told that they look forward to positive interaction with the mainland and more direct shipping links. She also said that the Taiwanese shipping lines, including Evergreen, Yang Ming and Wan Hai, are asking for the opening up of Chinese ports to facilitate business. According to MOTC statistics, mainland transhipment through Kaohsiung reached a record high of 60.000 TEUs in April.
