Security measures under the spotlight at IMO safety meeting

The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization met at its London Headquarters on May 12-21 to discuss various facets and the ongoing implementation of the ISPS Code worldwide. Topics discussed at the MSC conference included: the implementation the ISPS Code; control and compliance measures; shore leave and access to ships under the ISPS Code; guidelines for the implementation of SOLAS (a convention related to the treatment of persons in distress at sea); designation of the Master as the ship security officer; and ILO/IMO Code of practice on security in ports.
